belongs to the communication protocols family and has become widely accepted as an effective method for managing TCP/IP networks. The original SNMP concept designer is the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). SNMP protocol is adaptable and is suitable for any TCP/IP based network. SNMP itself is a front-end for gathering statistics and gaining data about a network device in terms of client-server relationship. The network manager (client program) connects virtually to the SNMP agent (server program) which tests the network device, and returns to the manager information about the device's status. The list of possible tests, collection of objects and the list of control values is called Management Information Base (MIB). VisNetic MailServer has a private MIB -
(see below) - that lists the possibilities of the SNMP protocol within VisNetic MailServer. The file also defines the structure of the queries and so called OIDs (object ID). The OIDs can be combined in ways to collect information about your server. To interpret this information we also provide an SNMP network manager utility for querying and connecting to your server -
. This utility may be downloaded from:
To enable SNMP: - Enable SNMP support in your VisNetic MailServer. VMS Admin / System / Advanced (v8.5) / Extensions tab (v8.3) - Restart the VisNetic Web/Control Service. VMS Admin / System / Services. - Create oidfile.txt containing the OIDs for testing, list of OIDs can be found in the snmp-mib.txt file along with the structure of query - Execute the SNMPutil network manager to read the defined in oidfile.txt The primary advantage of SNMP over traditional network management tools such as "ping", and "netstat" is SNMP's interoperability and universally accepted standard. With SNMP you can monitor almost any network device whether it is hardware or software. SNMP provides information on the manageable device. The SNMP support in VisNetic MailServer is primarily for integrators and developers. Most Administrators will be satisfied with the statistics provided within the VisNetic MailServer Administration Console. SNMP RFC is #1157. Learn more about SNMP at:
