Upgrade VisNetic MailServer 8.5 to 9
Upgrade VisNetic MailServer 8.5 to 9
The upgrade from v8.5 to v9 is fairly straight forward when it come to installing the software over top of your existing version. The installer will detect that you are upgrading from a previous version and will determine if your upgrade protection is valid allowing you to install over v8.5.
The following article, VisNetic MailServer Check List, outlines the
of upgrading VisNetic MailServer. Mainly you will need to review the Key section, the Installation section, and of course the Backup/Restore section.
VisNetic MailServer Check List
After you have reviewed the articles outlined in the VisNetic MailServer Check List you will need to download VisNetic MailServer version 9.
Download VisNetic MailServer:
If you are using the Groupware Outlook connector you will need to upgrade that after installing the upgrade for VisNetic MailServer 9 and after performing the database migrations explained below. New Groupware Outlook Connector software is located on the VisNetic MailServer download page.
Install VisNetic MailServer over version 8.5. If your upgrade protection is expired you will have the option to enter new keys during the install. If you are not sure about your upgrade protection status please contact our sales department for more information on your key options. Again refer to the Key section of the VisNetic MailServer Check List article for more information on keys.
During the installation it will ask you to backup Webmail, we recommend that you select yes to backup. The installer will also ask if you want new Webmail to be default or the old, we recommend that you use the new Webmail, more on that later. After the installer has upgraded VisNetic MailServer to version 9 you should be all set. However, you may need, or want to, refer to the following articles to migrate data to the new databases in version 9. This may not be required on all upgrades but is recommended for all upgrades so your new installation of VisNetic MailServer 9 is using the latest technology available in VisNetic MailServer.
The order that you perform the database migrations are very important, please only perform in this order. Also note, if you are using database connections for your own databases, such as MySQL or MS SQL, you will still need to migrate the databases. You simply need to follow the same instructions only referencing your existing MySQL or MS SQL ODBC connection as the source database and a new ODBC connection for new MySQL or MS SQL databases created prior to the database migration as the destination. Here's an example of how data will be migrated.
If you are using the built-in databases (MS Access and ODBC) of VisNetic MailServer
--> Old ODBC --> Old_database.mdb ::migrate:: --> new_database file (SQLite)
If you are using your own database
--> Old ODBC --> Old Database ::migrate:: --> New ODBC --> New Database
When the database migration takes place VisNetic MailServer not only moves the old data to the new database it also creates new tables required for the new database, which only work in VisNetic MailServer 9.1.x.
Perform database migration in this order,
Migrate Challenge Response
Migrate version 8.5 Groupware database
Convert plain text address books to Groupware database
What's new in VisNetic Webmail?
New VisNetic Webmail is located in a different directory and will be your new default Webmail, if selected during the install. The new location is /webmail/. You may notice that when you access Webmail that the login page looks different and the URL points to the new /webmail/ folder. You can still access the old Webmail, if needed, you simply change the URL to /mail/. For example,
New VisNetic Webmail
Old VisNetic Webmail
If you need to change the default Webmail back to the old Webmail you can do so by making the following change to the \html\ files located under the VisNetic MailServer installation directory.
1. Rename the existing index.html file to index.old
2. Rename the mail_index.html to index.html
3. Login to Webmail and the default should be old Webmail. You may need to clear browser cache or force a refresh (CTRL + F5).
If you need to get back to the new Webmail you can rename the existing index.html and change index.old back to index.html.
