Note: You can launch Abyss Web Server manually or configure it to run automatically when your computer boots up or when you start a user session in Windows.
Setting up a Web Site
Using your favorite web pages editor (also known as HTML editor), create a web site and put its files in the directory: Abyss Web Server directory/htdocs. The index files must be called index.html or index.htm. Place your website files in the “htdocs” folder.
Other computers on the network can access your web site if they browse: http://your host name:host port
"your host name" is the host name of your computer or its IP address. Ask your network's administrator for this information. If you want to connect to the server from the computer it runs on, you can also use 127.0.0.1, ::1, or localhost.
"host port" is the number of the port the server waits for connections on. It is displayed on the server's window or terminal. If "host port" is 80 (which is the default), it can be omitted from the URL and the web server can be accessed with only http://your host name.
With the
DNS2Go Client
software installed and online - anyone attempting to reach your web site would enter your DNS2Go domain name in their browser. As example:
http://mywebsite.dns2go.com
If you are running Abyss on a port other than the default HTTP port 80, you have two options.
1. Instruct visitors to reach your website by adding the port number to the URL.
http://mywebsite.dns2go.com:8080
. Where 8080 is your host port.
2. Enable WWW & Port Redirection in your DNS2Go Client. This is located on the Settings tab of the DNS2Go Client.
NOTE: You will also want to confirm your Router is configured to Port Forward web requests to the private IP address of the computer Abyss is installed to, and that Windows Firewall is not blocking the connection.
Note: It is common for Internet Service Providers to block common server ports (21,25,80,etc.) on non-business class plans.
Shutting down the server
Select Exit from the Server menu or close the server's main window. If the server is running, you will be asked to confirm exiting.
