Creating A List Server In VisNetic MailServer
Solution VisNetic MailServer

This article will bring you through the steps for creating a list server in VisNetic MailServer. The list server is used for accepting/processing list commands. A list server does not store / contain your list members email addresses.

Note: A list server is not required to host a list. You only need a list server if you are going to allow users to automatically subscribe and unsubscribe to your list via email.

From the VisNetic MailServer configuration console:

  1. Highlight the Domain in the left-hand window
  2. From the Accounts menu select Add
  3. Click New List Server
  4. Enter the list server name in the Alias field. (e.g.; listserv)
  5. Enter the list server description in the Description field. (e.g.; List server)
  6. Enter the list server owner in the Owner field. (e.g.; admin@deerfield.com)
  7. The List File field should be blank by default. This is only used if you are hosting multiple lists and you only want users to be able to automatically subscribe and unsubscribe to particular lists, not all of them. The text file is a file of domains that will be controlled by this list server. (e.g.; c:\domlists.txt)
Using the edit button, open the file and enter list name. (e.g.; chat@deerfield.com)
This allows the list server to administer the mailing list.
  8. Enable the Subject option. This option requires commands to be specified in the Subject line of messages. If you do not enable this option then the commands have to be specified in the first line of the body of the email message.
  9. The Allow Commands options specify what commands the list will accept.
    Join - Subscribe
Lists - Name of all lists associated with the list server
Leave - Unsubscribe Which - All lists particular user subscribed to
Review - List of all currently subscribed members
  10. Click Save

If using the Web Admin, from the VisNetic MailServer Web Admin:

  1. Select the Accounts link
  2. Click the domain the listserver will be associated with
  3. Click New Mailing List from the Lists section
(e.g.; chat@deerfield.net)
This allows the list server to administer the mailing list.
  8. Enable the List Server option
  9. Enable the Subject option. This option requires commands to be specified in the Subject line of messages. If you do not enable this option then the commands have to be specified in the first line of the body of the email message.
